MOVEMENT CLASS

In these Movement classes, we lay a foundation to extract more from our dance. We look at the broader picture of human movement capability and biomechanics to build a strong and flexible body, leading to more freedom in our dance later on. Additionally, emphasis is placed on articulating the spine and improving joint mobility. Exercises are also shared to prevent (knee) injuries and become familiar with floorwork and soft acrobatics.

Ivana Zakova (Ivy Flow) and Noelle Vosman (ino.moves) share their knowledge in the weekly Movement class. Movement is a practice that combines strength, mobility, flexibility, and creativity. It was pioneered by Ido Portal in the 2000s in Israel. Ido believed that none of the specific disciplines went deep enough to understand the larger picture of ‘movement,’ and basic tools are needed to understand movements within specific disciplines at a high level.

HOUSE DANCE CLASS

House Dance is a dance style that originated in the late 70s and early 80s in underground clubs in Chicago and New York. The style was influenced by various movements, including Tap, African dance, Latin American dance, and martial arts. House Dance is about freedom, improvisation, and feeling the music.

This class is accessible to anyone who wants to train the physical aspects of House Dance and explore the conceptual side together. The HOUSE IN CONTEXT classes are designed to better understand this relatively young club dance style from the perspectives of nightlife, dance theater, and the battle scene. The history and forms that this dance style takes on in different parts of the world are also covered. The classes are taught by Patricie Bendova and Saskia Nartey Wemegah.

The Amsterdam House Dance Community (AHDC) was founded in 2013 to create a space where house dancers can express themselves. Now, the Amsterdam House Dance Community organizes gatherings for (house) dancers—a place where we can jam together and introduce people to house dance.

The community is open to collaborations and can be reached via social media or email: ahousedancecommunity@gmail.com.

* The classes are suitable for English speakers as well as Dutch speakers.
