Katre-Helen Kask

Let us think of silence not in terms of subtraction – the mere absence of noise – but view it as something that emerges from the natural realm.

When one listens to silence which is painted by the sounds of nature, one begins to hear the true music of the Earth. A composition that does not resonate in grandiose symphonies but in the quiet whispers of trees. What would happen if we stop viewing the forest as a source of artistic inspiration but as the source itself?

Katre is a sound designer based in Amsterdam, originally from Estonia. Her current work explores silence and acoustic spatiality. Through her Maker in Huis project, she embarks on a synesthetic exploration of the connection between trees, people and music. How can we listen to trees through an embodied practice? How can we resonate with and amplify their presence? And can we engage in a multidisciplinary conservation effort by preserving trees in our auditory memory?
